The air has turned crisp, the leaves have begun to turn, and I’ve partaken in one of the few hot coffees I drink each year…. October 1 is here and the Anne of Green Gables quote “I’m So Glad I Live In A World Where There Are Octobers.” is the first thing that pops into my head on this day each year.
Anne was one of my favorite childhood literary characters, the way she always finds the silver lining, and celebrates the ordinary is something that I really admire in her. She’s got a fiery temper too, which makes her all the more loveable.
Last week, I saw Stella Cole in concert here in Alexandria. It was a rainy evening as we headed into the Birchmere, and as we side stepped puddles and entered the venue it felt a bit like stepping back in time. Stella is such a talent, and sings all of the songs I listened to in my childhood, from My Fair Lady, Moon River to The Tender Trap (Sinatra). She was accompanied by a piano, an upright bass, and drums, and the intimate venue made it feel like she was singing to old friends. Her version of Over The Rainbow gave me goosebumps, please tell me you’ll give it a listen…
I’m planning a Parent Trap Watch Party on October 11th, and I can’t wait. I’m going to make chili, and serve peanut butter and Oreos, and play Nat King Cole as my friends arrive. It’s going to be glorious. We may even dust off our Parent Trap Handshake Skills- It’s been a casual 25 years since I learned it, but hopefully it’ll come back just like riding a bike.
Time is such a strange phenomenon- the way it passes slowly at some points, and so quickly at others. I find when I rewatch movies now my perspective has changed from the child in the movies to that of the heroine in their 30’s, yet it feels like just yesterday these movies came out. Watching Parent Trap I remember wanting to be just like Annie and Hallie, but now I’m thinking I’d love to live in Elizabeth’s flat in London, also Sammy would come from Napa because Clemmie could use a friend.
Do you have any favorite fall traditions or movies you watch?
